the prinoessIf Isay thet I am one, the world will befieve me, or else, what is the e of being the wisest man? If Isil, I shall only be whst 1 am siready—s fool! therefore, I am s primoe and I will go mary the princess. o Novw, this princess of whom the fool had spoken was, as all princesses must be, the most besutiful and hard-hearted young womsn of the pemod. The gates of ber palsce were mobbed by suitors, and as many as five or stx hung themselves in despair, each day, because the primoen was detormined to marry no one but her wuperior. When the fool heard that, he pondered a gain. ““The princess is a wise woman, and I am s fool. She is dotermmed to find her superior. Very good, I will be her superior!"

Aoocordingly, when desired to wait upon the princess, in her ball of sudience, he seated bimsolf instend, saying baugbtily I am not certain yet that 1 desire to see the princess at all. The womsn whom I marry must be besutful, wise, bumble, modest, witty, truthful, amsble, graceful, and madly in love with me." Then he crossed his legs and losked up at the ociling with such an air of indifference that the princess sent to demand who he was, concinding that he must be some grest person who dared to be so uncivil, and required se many virtues and acoomplishments. "“Tell ber," rephed thefool, "that it is of no consequence what I am or bave been. A grest many things are permitted a man that would be intolerable in a woman."

When the princess hesrd that, she was at once convinced that she had found her superior, and they were merried forthwith.

The Court-fool was now the busband of princess, and recived suoh honors as are paid to kings; yet he was not altogether on roses. The priucess was sharp-witted, and be was constantly in danger of being found out, had it not been for the wisest man's receipe. When he uttered some folly, and the princess exclaimed, "“my dear1" he returned loftily, "if you bad been wiser, you would have understood me better. 1If sbe was inclined to medadle in state affairs, "which is the wiser," be asked ironioally, “you or 17" And as there was always danger lest sbe should see and bear too constantly informed her that if she wished to preserve bis admirstion, she must know as little as possible about out of door mat tor, and keep herself in a sort of seclusion, so that he could wlways think of ber as something 150f and part from every-day people and the rebble."

So pumber of years passed happily for the foot, but mot so bappily for the primoess. who bardly dared darsw a full breath. lest she should do it, like a common person, and so lose some of that admirstion so bardly kept and so casily ost; amd at inst, whe said to her busband I am hesrtily tired of the monotony and soolumon of my hfe. As well be a pictare on the walls at onoe, If you are a prince, 1 ama prinoss. 1see no rearon why 1 sbould not know something of what is gomn on outse. nd when you mgn the state papors. why should mot sot my name there also. You will take my crown snd robes, adminster justice, and make laws, and1 shall be only Court-fool set to rock the orsdle, to sew on buttons, to make paste, to stich wp soams." when the princess beard the, she was much perplened, and bappening to meet ber nurse. she 4d her what her busband bad just boen saying. The nurse burst into a violent fit of laughter. The princess drew berself up.

“My dear," said the murse, pray do not be ofended. But does your Roysl Highnmess conmder your busband supenior to yourself? Cousider I know that be is;" cried the princess. “Certainly! Of course ! but bow did your the fact? Why. he to1d me so," answered the prinoess. hesitatingly and surprised.

“Enactly! and be tolls you now, that if you set your name to certain papers, thet be will beoome Court-foolThen, depend upon it, my dear, that be knows himself to be that alvesdy and thet any men who deciares that B will lose his manliness, resign his privileges, echange duties, to sueak sbout in kitchens and nurseries, and turn fool, if hs wife signs peper, or bas an opinion on state affairs, is a fool already ; only be bas not yet been found out."
